Phil Garrett is a painter and printmaker whose work draws on the natural world — the power of storms, the spiritual quality of the elements, the beauty and ferocity of plants and animals. His paintings and monotypes are a search for the mystery within the subject, and within himself.

Garrett studied at the University of South Carolina and the Honolulu Academy of Arts before earning his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974, where he was immersed in the
Bay Area Figurative tradition and the collaborative printmaking culture of the era. That model of artists working alongside master printers shaped the rest of his career.

Garrett’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the South Carolina
State Museum, the Greenville County Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art, and the state collections of South Carolina, New Mexico, and Hawaii. He has taught painting and printmaking internationally, lectured widely on acrylic and oil techniques through the Golden Artist Colors Working Artist Program, and is the author of Inside Acrylics (North Light, 2013).

He currently lives in Landrum, SC and works from his studio in Mill Spring, NC.
